Methyl salicylate Introdution:

This product has a strong odor similar to that of wintergrass. It is often used as a fragrance agent in the preparation of medicine, such as cavity medicine and paint. It is also used in the flavoring of common fragrances, such as tree and other spices. Methyl salicylate is also used as solvent and intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides, fungicides, spices, coatings, cosmetic inks and fiber dyeing aids. Methyl salicylate reacts with ammonia to form salicylamide, which is used in the production of ethylsalicylamine, an antipyretic and analgesic drug. Methyl acetylsalicylate (C10H10O4, [580-02-9]) was obtained by acetylation of methyl salicylate. Methyl salicylate and acetic anhydride are put into the reaction pot, and sulfuric acid is added under stirring. The reaction temperature is not more than 60 C, about 1 h. After reaction, the reactant is poured into ice water to precipitate crystals, filtered, washed and dried, which is called methyl acetylsalicylate. 4-hydroxycoumarin can be synthesized by cyclization of acetylsalicylic acid. Methyl salicylate is used as an external red-blooming agent in medicine.
